MoFi's Turntable Trio: UltraDeck, StudioDeck, and StudioDeck Foundation
By Bes Nievera

I still remember my first purchase of a Mobile Fidelity Original Master Recording LP. It was Genesis' A Trick of the Tail, and I bought it in the 1980s. I was stunned not only by the remastering work in the grooves, but also by the quality of the packaging. It was an amazing achievement. At that time, I had just missed the boat on the one album everyone lusted after, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, which MoFi had released a couple of years earlier.

That legendary rock classic launched an analog revolution that continues to this day. Every MoFi title ever released has been praised by music collectors worldwide. Today, MoFi's groundbreaking Ultradisc One-Step releases have become the world's most revered LPs among audiophiles, who quickly snatch up these limited-edition sets, pressed on MoFi heavyweight SuperVinyl at RTI. In short, MoFi continues to showcase the magic that music can reveal on this august format.

Therefore, it comes as no surprise that MoFi Electronics is focused on delivering that legendary Original Master Recording sonic experience via its acclaimed turntables: the UltraDeck, StudioDeck, and Foundation. These three models are a hallmark of ingenuity, and with incredibly reasonable price points, any of them can help music lovers to up their game with it comes to musical enjoyment.

For the UltraDeck turntable, MoFi collaborated with renowned turntable designer Allen Perkins to create a reference-level player without the five- or six-figure price tag. The team endowed it with the highest-quality parts to reproduce the famous accuracy of MoFi's Original Master Recordings – and every LP you play.

Proudly made in the USA at Mobile Fidelity's in-house factory in Michigan, the sturdy, 23-pound UltraDeck stands out with an aluminum-plated MDF plinth for increased dampening. The thick, 1.3-inch Delrin platter is supported by a hardened steel bearing, bronze sleeve, and sapphire thrust pad for a smooth and quiet rotation. Add an ester-based bearing grease to the mix, and this combination delivers deep-black backgrounds and a remarkably low noise floor. The mechanically isolated 300RPM AC synchronous motor provides excellent speed stability and rhythmic drive.

This UltraDeck is also outfitted with MoFi's 10-inch straight tonearm. The aluminum gimbaled bearing design provides a hyper-accurate retrieval of your favorite content. Cardas Audio wiring is used to maintain signal purity from the head shell leads all the way through the RCA connectors, while a shielded copper box prevents airborne RF noise.

The tonearm's adjustable tracking force, VTA, azimuth, and anti-skate grant you limitless options for tweaks and adjustments. Height-adjustable anti-vibration feet – co-developed with the engineering team at Harmonic Resolution Systems – further shield UltraDeck from micro-level resonances, giving you the full bandwith of your favorite records, just as they were meant to be heard.

Since its introduction, the UltraDeck has continuously won praise around the globe, earning six best-of awards from Europe's Expert Imaging and Sound Association (EISA), as well as acclaim from Stereophile, which named it a Product of the Year, and The Absolute Sound, which described it as "an instant classic."

Although some might be tempted to think of MoFi's StudioDeck as a "little brother" to the UltraDeck, let's call it an astonishing turntable that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Designer Allen Perkins and the team brought us a turntable that would meet an important cost-to-performance metric, while ensuring that every listening session would be as close as possible to the master-tape experience. To do this, they looked to the UltraDeck for inspiration, and the result is a remarkable, slimmed-down turntable that holds its own for a sensational sound with your treasured stacks o' wax.

This made-in-America turntable features an outsized plinth with constrained layer dampening, while a steel and Teflon inverted bearing system supports the three-quarter-inch Delrin platter. And, just like the award-winning UltraDeck, the 10-inch Studio tonearm uses an aluminum armwand that's fully adjustable in tracking force, VTA, azimuth, and enhanced anti-skate. Finally, the 300RPM AC synchronous motor provides that extra touch in speed stability while keeping everything quiet with advanced dampening materials.

Yet, with all that sophistication, MoFi wanted to help the growing audio community embrace analog playback, and its new StudioDeck Foundation does just that in an audiophile-grade turntable with all-American build and vibe. Featuring the MoFi touch but at a more affordable price point (by offering its height-adjustable feet and smoked dust cover as options), this deck eschews the high-performance cost associated with rigs above its price point. This is a brilliant turntable for budget-minded music lovers wanting real value in their listening experiences – not an overpriced player constructed with compromised-quality parts.
