Superior in Every Way: Wharfedale Super Linton Bookshelf Speakers Feature Across-the-Board Upgrades and Stands, Play Music with Exceptional Detail, Expressiveness, Scale, Extension, and Fun
We’ll let you in on a little secret: The “super” term that’s part of the Wharfedale Super Linton bookshelf speakers' name is actually shorthand for “superior.” That designation originated with the company’s mid-20th century "Super" series models, which included the first Super Linton that debuted in 1967. Fast-forward nearly six decades, and the Super Linton units with included stands you’re admiring here are vastly different and, yes, superior.
Drawing from the goodness that has made the Linton 85th Anniversary model Wharfedale’s best-selling speaker for several years running, Super Linton boasts across-the-board upgrades to the drivers, crossover, and cabinet. Starting with a taller cabinet for a larger internal volume and enhanced construction to enhance its acoustic responsiveness, Super Linton delivers spellbindingly emotional performance across the entire frequency range whilst maintaining the lively, involving, and fun characteristics that have attracted so many listeners to its sibling.
Playing with exceptional detail, control, weight, definition, scale, expressiveness, and extension, the 23.8 x 11.8 x 13.0-inch (HWD) Super Linton utilizes an eight-inch Kevlar cone woofer with a new, extremely powerful motor system with strong magnets to go really deep — 32Hz, to be exact — and supply bass that is controlled, robust, accurate, and fast. If you crave dynamics, you came to the right place.
On the other side of the spectrum, a brand-new one-inch fabric dome tweeter that borrows much of its architecture from that used in Wharfedale’s flagship Dovedale operates with smooth, sweet, and warm responsiveness A few keys to its success owe to a diaphragm driven by a ceramic magnet-based motor system with a damped rear chamber that absorbs rear-directed output, an approach that both allows for full treble harmonics and ideal integration. A revised short horn profile around the dome and new front plate assist with dispersion.
As for the all-important midrange? Super Linton relies on the same five-inch woven Kevlar driver found in its sibling, but boosts it by housing it in an isolated cylindrical chamber laden with long-hair fiber layers to cancel out the back wave from the rear of the cone. The upshot? Clean, seamless integration of the three drivers and natural, open, multi-dimensional playback of practically every kind of music.
But why stop there? Super Linton boasts an all-new crossover network split onto two separate circuit boards to prevent any possibility of electromagnetic interference between the highs and lows. While the midrange and treble inductors are air-core designs, the bass inductor is wound on a proprietary “Super-Power” laminated silicon-iron core. As for the internal cabling? It bests that in Linton as well, with a polyethylene dielectric and LCOFC (Linear Crystal Oxygen-Free Copper) conductors for optimal transfer properties.
Visually, with its hand-matched wood veneers and satin finish, Super Linton looks every bit like the Heritage Series speaker it is — with or without the grilles, which now incorporate internal shaping to smooth the midrange and treble output as well as enhance the transition through the crossover region. Just wait until you hear the level of coherency and realism. Importantly, that comes through on both older recordings and modern digital fare that have different demands when it comes to playback.
Weighing 43.65 pounds each, and very easy to drive due to the high 90dB sensitivity rating, Super Linton also aces the compatibility ability test. It matches with an extraordinary range of amplifiers and offers the kind of joy all of us want when we listen to music.
Plus, each pair in this bundle comes with a pair of stands (the exact same used by Linton) custom-designed to support the size and weight of the cabinet, and to present the listening axis at just the right spot. The metal-framed stands also provide critical vibration damping and allow room for you to store some of your vinyl LP collection right underneath the speakers. Now that is true hi-fi!
