Henry Mancini Peter Gunn on Hybrid Stereo SACD from Analogue Productions
Now on Hybrid Stereo SACD!
Mastered from the Analog Tapes by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound
This is the recording that truly established Henry Mancini as both an innovator and a household name. While he had already nabbed an Oscar nomination, this soundtrack to the hit 1959 television series Peter Gunn with its jazz score logged ten weeks at the top of the charts and remained a top seller for almost two years. While Blake Edwards' detective show may not have proved an enduring favorite, the music certainly has.
Of course, the memorable "Peter Gunn" theme is the anchor here. The interlocking bass and drums provided hits for artists as diverse as Ray Anthony, Duane Eddy, Deodato and The Art of Noise. Mancini was also working with some of the best musicians in the business here with special mention going to trumpeter Pete Candoli, saxophonist Ronnie Lang and pianist Johnny T. Williams, who would later earn own his own share of awards as composer John Williams.
Henry Mancini composed music that's woven into the fabric of American pop culture: "The Pink Panther Theme," the "Peter Gunn" bass line, "Moon River" (from Breakfast at Tiffany's), "Days of Wine and Roses" and more. Mancini holds the record for most Grammy nominations (72), out of which he won 20. In addition to his four Academy Awards, he won a Golden Globe, secured two Emmy nominations and was honored in 2004 with a United States Commemorative Postal Stamp.
