The music of Absu has been described as mysterious, majestic, magical, powerful and progressive, but the band has always classified their sound as "mythological occult metal." This style of supernatural music has earned Absu a strong following, yet a cult-like status around the world. Their talent to combine the right amounts of extreme metal music with progressive overtones, and solid songs with magnificent showmanship, has merited the respect of fellow musicians and followers alike. Absu is the band's eponymous fifth studio album, originally released in 2009 by Candlelight Records. Drummer/vocalist Proscriptor McGovern notes, "Lyrically, I am concentrating more on Sumerian-based occult themes of magick and mythology versus the Celtic aspect of my previous writings, which was heavily expressed on the last few Absu studio albums. Musically speaking, the material will be quite similar to Tara, but with more of a '70s progressive/psychedelic texture within it."
