Produced by Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre, Eminem) and mixed by noted engineer Andy Wallace, the fifth Avenged Sevenfold album, Nightmare (2010) drew on everything from the earliest influences and inspirations that bonded the band in their youth to the vast spectrum of tastes they've developed over the years, reaching far outside the rock and punk universes one might expect in the process. Dedicated to the band's former drummer Jimmy 'The Rev' Sullivan who passed away in December 2009, Nightmare features Sullivan's favorite drummer, Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy behind the kit. Propelled by the singles "Nightmare," "Welcome to the Family" and "So Far Away," the dark concept album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and has been certified Platinum.
