The debut solo studio album by the acclaimed NYC-based hip-hop producer and beatmaker Blockhead originally released in 2004. Initially building a rep via his close association with fellow New Yorker and rapper Aesop Rock and releasing via El P’s cult underground hip-hop label Definitive Jux, it was perhaps inevitable that Blockhead would explore solo instrumental production. The beats on ‘Music by Cavelight’ explore moodier tones and textures with lush instrumentation underpinned by trademark tough drums.
This is a record that establishes its own emotional space and holds it from start to finish, establishing Blockhead as a major player in the so-called trip-hop movement alongside the likes of DJ Shadow, RJD2, DJ Krush and Kid Koala. The 20th anniversary edition includes 2 bonus discs featuring classic Aesop Rock instrumentals and never-before-released “Lost Files” from ‘99-’03.
