The legendary Memphis Soul Kings Booker T. & the MG's began their careers early in the 1960s playing, arranging and writing for Stax artists behind the scenes at the famed studio. What started out as a simple jam with a different take on chordal structures, "Green Onions" was created while jamming in the studio. In record time, the tune burst into the soul and pop charts and quickly hit number one in the soul charts.
The amazing hit single crossed over to the top rungs of the pop charts in 1962, making this one of the most important recordings that year, while also crossing over this legendary quartet to an AM pop radio buying audience.
Thanks to this wonderful track, which has gone on to earn him multitudes of awards, accolades and a reputation of being one of the greatest soul records of all time, Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper, Donald Duck Dunn and Al Jackson would go on to make more huge hit records for the masses for many more years.
More big hits followed for Booker T & the MG's, delivering more soul infusion to record buyers and radio stations with smashes like "Red Beans & Rice," "Soul Dressing," "Mo' Onions," "Hip Hug-Her," and others.
