Ernie K-Doe's 1961 Album Mother-In-Law on LP.
Charly Records are proud to announce the first ever long-play reissue of the New Orleans masterpiece, Mother-In-Law, penned and produced by Allen Toussaint and Ernie K-Doe.
Ernest Kador Jr was born in New Orleans in 1933 and adopted the pseudonym Ernie K-Doe for his flamboyant on-stage performances. He was an eccentric local figure branding himself as the “Emperor of the Universe” and using the catch phrase “Burn K-Doe, Burn!” for his explosive radio shows.
He is, of course, best known for his 1961 Billboard #1 pop and R&B hit ‘Mother-In-Law’, also the title track of our album. The song was written by Allen Toussaint who initially struggled to get an acceptable take. Thanks to back-up singer Willie Harper they gave it another try and struck gold. Toussaint also played piano on the finished recording. Sadly, K-Doe was unable to repeat the success although he did break the R&B Top 40 with ‘Te-Ta-Te-Ta-Ta’ featured here and with ‘Later For Tomorrow’ in 1967.
In 1994 K-Doe opened his own bar in downtown New Orleans known as the Mother-In-Law Lounge which remains as a shrine to the singer to this day.
