Garden State: Music From The Motion Picture - Various Artists on 180g 2LP
Written, directed and starring Zach Braff, the 2004 film Garden State finds Andrew Largeman (Braff) returning to his hometown for the funeral of his clinically depressed mother, a journey that reconnects him with some of his past friends. Because the trip coincides with his decision to stop taking his powerful antidepressants, he also begins to reconnect with himself. A chance meeting with Sam (Natalie Portman), a girl also suffering from various maladies, opens up the possibility of rekindling emotional attachments, confronting his psychologist father, and perhaps beginning a new life.
Garden State's accompanying soundtrack, compiled by Braff himself, is as integral to the film as any other aspect and was recognized with a 2005 Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album. In addition to classic material from Simon & Garfunkel ("The Only Living Boy in New York") and Nick Drake ("One of These Things First"), the eclectic soundtrack includes a star making turn from The Shins ("Caring Is Creepy," "New Slang") and further contemporary artists like Coldplay ("Don't Panic"), Zero 7 ("In the Waiting Line"), Thievery Corporation ("Lebanese Blonde") and Iron & Wine ("Such Great Heights").
