With Phil Collins‘ solo career in full swing Genesis hit another gear and ripped up the charts with their eponymous 1983 effort, the first album by the group after the Charisma label had been bought by Virgin. With each of its nine tracks a co-write between Tony Banks, Collins and Mike Rutherford (thus its title), Genesis marked yet another rebirth for the constantly evolving outfit, now more pop-based than ever, and took the band to yet another level of commercial success. Where its predecessor Abacab had already represented a best in terms of record sales Genesis doubled it moving a staggering four million copies in the U.S. alone thanks to huge hits like "Mama" and "That's All.
