James Brown The Payback on 2LP
Originally issued on Polydor Records in 1973, James Brown's sprawling 8-song, 73-minute double album The Packback is one of The Hardest Working Man In Show Business' finest and most ambitious statements of the '70s with only one track clocking in under 7-minutes and three 10-minutes and above. James is in excellent company here, a band which at this time consisted of Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, St. Clair Pinckney, Jimmy Nolen and Jabo Starks, offering up tight extended rhythm-based jams which are equally hooky and hypnotic. Along with the revenge-themed title cut classic, The Payback is home to further funk workouts like "Take Some, Leave Some," "Stone to the Bone" and "Mind Power" plus a couple of well placed soulful ballads in "Doing The Best I Can" and "Forever Suffering."
