The John Coltrane Quartet Coltrane (1962) on LP

Recorded in 1962 for the Impulse! label, the landmark Coltrane was the first studio album to feature the classic line-up of the John Coltrane Quartet with Trane on tenor and soprano saxophones, McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on drums. Produced by Bob Thiele, the five wonderful performances here touch on a number of Coltrane's many talents including extended tenor soloing "Out Of This World," expressive ballad work, "Soul Eyes," and even some soprano sax "The Inch Worm," plus a penchant for original composition with the compelling "Tunji" and "Miles' Mode."
