LL Cool J Mama Said Knock You Out on LP
Def Jam 30th Anniversary Reissue with New 3D Eye Popping Cover Art
Mama Said Knock You Out is a certifiable hip-hop classic which not only marked LL Cool J’s return to form but solidified his legendary status in the rap game for good in the process. Produced by Marley Marl, the 1990 masterwork sold in excess of two million copies and is arguably the biggest and most important of his career. The album spawned four successful singles including the powerhouse title cut, "The Boomin' System," "Around the Way Girl" and "6 Minutes Of Pleasure" and took home a Grammy award for Best Rap Solo Performance in 1992.
Already a rap veteran at the young age of 22, LL Cool J understood the tightrope of fame and street cred that he was walking when it came to his fourth album. While lesser men would have cracked under the pressures of coming of age on wax, the top tier entertainer was able to synthesize his growing pains into platinum records. What may have begun as teenage braggadocio on 1985 debut Radio had now matured to the delicate confidence of a grown man facing adversity and taking on life’s challenges head-on.
LL took an active role in all aspects of the album's creation including the visuals, suggesting a photo from a Vogue Italy magazine shoot that would inspire the iconic minimalist cover design. In celebration of Def Jam's 30th Anniversary UMe will be reissuing Mama Said Knock You Out on vinyl with an updated cover treatment showcasing LL's new 3D eye popping gold jewelry that was previously in black and white.
