November of 1984 saw the release of Like A Virgin, Madonna's second studio album, and the collection that would make her a household name. Produced by Chic's Nile Rodgers, the sexually charged opus churned out four U.S. top five singles: the title track (No. 1), "Material Girl" (No. 2), "Angel" (No. 5) and "Dress You Up" (No. 5). "Like a Virgin is a much harder album, much more aggressive than the first record," explained the singer. "The songs on that were pretty weak. On this one I've chosen all the songs and I want them to be all hits – no fillers. That's why I've done outside songs as well as six of my own...I wanted every song to be strong." Like A Virgin spent three weeks atop the Billboard 200 albums chart and lingered there for over two years. The diamond certified affair remains her biggest selling studio release in the U.S. to date with sales of over 10 million and one of the best-selling albums of all time with sales of over 21 million worldwide.
