Milt Jackson Sunflower on 180g Import LP from Pure Pleasure
This 1972 CTI release finds acclaimed vibraphonist and Modern Jazz Quartet founding member Milt Jackson leading a stellar line-up consisting of Freddie Hubbard (trumpet, flugelhorn), Herbie Hancock (piano), Jay Berliner (guitar), Ron Carter (bass), Billy Cobham (drums) and Ralph MacDonald (percussion) while some exquisite background coloring from a chamber orchestra arranged and conducted by Don Sebesky perfectly complements the proceedings.
The superb 4-song set opens with Jackson's own "For Someone I Love (What's Your Story)," followed by the Legrand/Bergman ballad "What Are You Doing for the Rest of Your Life" and a funky rendition of The Stylistics' "People Make The World Go Round" before closing with the Hubbard composed ode "Sunflower." From its program of songs, to the players involved and the solos they're all afforded throughout, not to mention production from Creed Taylor, it's no wonder Sunflower has gone down as one of the finest releases on the CTI imprint and one of Jackson's best dates as a leader.
