Rhino's research scientists may not have definitively proven which month of the calendar year rocks the hardest, but they've checked out their initial stats, and are comfortable enough with the results to say that it's probably October. After all, do you think it's mere coincidence that it's so easy to tweak the name and turn it into Rocktober? Hardly. Rhino's third annual Rocktober campaign features 20 vinyl releases including titles from Dio, Grateful Dead, Alice Cooper, The Rutles, Faces, Black Sabbath and Television.
Opeth has spent over two decades steadily amassing a body of work that is at once possessed of a fervent and unrelenting devotion to aesthetic progression (and perfection) while simultaneously scaling the summits of power, mysticism and might aspired to by the group's hard rock forefathers in Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin. The band's roots in the doom-laden shade of occult-infused Scandinavian death metal and dark romanticism are undeniable and will never elicit apology. However, band leader, singer, guitarist, songwriter and long-running member Mikael Åkerfeldt has consistently reshaped the pathway forward for his artistic vehicle without sacrificing the hard won spiritualism of previous endeavors.
Eleventh studio album Pale Communion (2014) was produced by Åkerfeldt and mixed by longtime collaborator and Porcupine Tree frontman/guitarist Steven Wilson and is heralded by lead single, "Cusp of Eternity." The material find's Opeth once again challenging the boundaries of extreme music with stellar results. Colored 180g 2LP-set.
