Description

In 1988 pianist Evgeny Kissin, then only 17 years young, started his world career with an electrifying interpretation of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 at the Berliner Philharmoniker's New Year's Eve Concert. The brilliance and adolescence of the gifted pianist was complemented wonderfully by conductor Herbert von Karajan's wisdom of age; it turned out to be one of the Maestro's last recordings as he would pass away from a heart attack before it was released. "Kissin is the kind of player who is worth hearing whatever the surroundings. The Scriabin pieces give a taste of that...In the Concerto his tremendous technical assurance is evident not just in terms of sheer facility but in the ability to spread passagework and make musical capital of the unwanted space given him" (Gramophone).
