From the start, the Byrds were known for stellar songs, both those from their own pens as well as carefully chosen covers. The band's distinctive instrumental sound provided a blueprint for countless groups and even influenced their mentors, the Beatles. Vocally, the Byrds were a powerhouse, capable of multi-part harmonies and boasting three distinct lead vocalists. They packed a lifetime of melodic innovation into a decade before moving on to new challenges in the '70s.
The Byrds' eponymous 1973 swan song was recorded around the reunion of the five original band members (Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, David Crosby, Chris Hillman, and Michael Clarke) for the first time since 1966. Recorded at the Wally Heider studios in Los Angeles during October and November 1972, the album featured compositions by Clark ("Full Circle," "Changing Heart"), McGuinn ("Sweet Mary," "Born to Rock n' Roll") and Hillman ("Things Will Be Better," "Borrowing Time") along with Crosby's "Long Live the King" and a new version of "Laughing" (originally recorded by Crosby on his 1971 solo album If Only I Could Remember My Name).
The album also featured a cover version of Joni Mitchell's "For Free" and two Neil Young compositions, "Cowgirl in the Sand" and "(See the Sky) About to Rain," the latter not released by Young himself until 1974 when his version appeared on the album On the Beach.
