"Killing Me Softly" Artist Teams with Renown Matangi Quartet for Classical/Crossover Album; 180g 45RPM Vinyl 2LP-Set Recorded at 192KHz/24bits, Mixed by Bob Clearmountain & Mastered by Darcy Proper at Wisseloord Studios
Leonard Cohen came up on stage in one of her concerts and sang "Bird On A Wire." Don McLean invited her to be a part of his documentary, American Troubadour. Judy Collins called her "a gifted songwriter." But Lori Lieberman's defining career/life - changing moment came one evening when her good friend, writer, Michele Willens, invited her to a concert at the Troubadour, and the song "Killing Me Softly," from that experience, became one of the most beloved of our generation. Highly regarded among her peers and younger artists alike, this legendary artist has continued to make her mark in an ever-changing industry and develop a loyal and devoted base of fans along the way.
Lieberman's nineteenth album release, The Girl and the Cat, features the renowned string ensemble from the Netherlands, the Matangi Quartet. Lieberman co-created the string orchestration for her songs, which showcase the quartet, with cellist Stefanie Fife. Included in this vast collection, is Don McLean's "Empty Chairs," which first inspired Lieberman's poem that became the now classic "Killing Me Softly." The overall style is a classical/crossover – with Lieberman on piano and guitar, Brian Kilgore on timpani and percussion, Matt Chamberlain on drums, Trey Henry on upright bass, Jaap Kwakman on additional acoustic guitar, and Jeff Driskill on woodwinds. It was mixed by the legendary Bob Clearmountain and mastered by Darcy Proper at Wisseloord Studios in Hilversum.
"It's finally here...My new album, 'The Girl and the Cat' with the Matangi Quartet. It's a project that has meant so much to me over the years that it's taken me to bring this to fruition - it began with the seed of an idea to do a project with the gifted string ensemble with whom I'd worked years ago. And then, I began to write, with them in mind, songs that open up to showcase their artistry in large open sections. I reached out to cellist, Stefanie Fife, and asked if we could do the string arrangements together. It took two years to record both in LA and in the Netherlands - back and forth - engineered by Joseph Cali in LA, in the Netherlands, by Hans Ravenstein, in 192, and when it was ready, mixed by the legendary Bob Clearmountain, who fit me into his schedule in between Springsteen and the Stones. The songs are from my life - my challenges-all ones that have turned into gifts along the way."
